The Thornton Yearbook sent reporters and photographers to report on our COP28 climate rally on Dec. 12. Our president made a speech on the importance of addressing the climate crisis and many students joined us as we marched from the flagpole to the field. We raised student awareness about the importance of addressing the climate crisis.
To promote more eco-friendly ways to commute to school, we club hosted the Golden Sneaker Contest from March 4 - 15, 2024. For two weeks, we collected data on who used active and shared transportation to school. To reduce car traffic onto campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods, carpool drivers were encouraged to drop-off riders a half-mile from campus so students could walk part-way.
We hosted three events in April to celebrate Earth Day. First, we hosted an Alka seltzer rocket blastoff for the winners of the Golden Sneaker contest. Students made bird feeders from milk cartons recovered from the green bins for the second event. We taught students how to grow plants from food scraps for the final event.
