We used what we learned from our study for the San Jose State Garrett Morgan Sustainable Transportation competition in 2023-2024 to further progress on safe and healthy Active Transportation at Thornton. The traffic audit we conducted revealed some safety concerns, including:
Most of Thornton's 1900 students commute to school by carpool. The bulk of the 575 cars dropped off students between 7:50-8:05 am, which is 15 min. before the bell at 8:05. The volume of cars created a safety issue for walkers and bikers.
Neighborhoods in the rear of the campus were being used as drop-off points. These neighborhoods do not have clearly marked bike lanes, crosswalks, and signage.
Other safety concerns include: cars making 3-points turns interfering with the traffic flow, student jaywalking, and the lack of adult supervision.
Creating a Culture of Safe and Healthy Active Transportation
Hosted three events: International Walk and Roll to School, Ruby Bridges Walk and Roll to School, and the Golden Sneaker Contest
Administration periodically sends reminders and literature to families about Suggested Routes to School, Safety Tips, and Driving Tips.
Safe Routes to School has been tabling at school events such as MAZE days and Wellness Week.
Remember - Part Way is Okay!
Get dropped off at least a half mile from school and walk part way.
Classroom Recycling and Waste Separation
We continued to run Classroom Recycling and Waste Separation Flexes throughout school year. With the help of students and custodial staff, we collected 240 yards of green waste that were placed in the green dumpster to be sent to the compost facility during the 40-week school year. Teachers and staff used the battery and ink cartridge collection bins. 85 ink cartridges and 17 bags of batteries were recycled at Staples and Dale Hardware this school year.
